# Trilium Incremental Markdown Backup
A lightweight, incremental backup tool for [TriliumNext](https://github.com/TriliumNext/Notes) that exports your notes as individual Markdown (`.md`) files.
Instead of exporting your entire vault every time, this script queries the ETAPI to download **only the notes that have been modified** since the last run. Large vaults are backed up in seconds after the initial full export.
No plugins or Node.js required—just a single Python script, the Trilium ETAPI, and a cron job.
---
## 🚀 Features
* **Incremental Backups:** Skips notes whose `dateModified` hasn't changed since the last backup timestamp.
* **Folder Hierarchy:** Automatically organizes your `.md` files into folders that mirror your Trilium note tree.
* **Smart Filenames:** Saves files as `Note Title [note_id].md` to completely prevent name collisions (e.g., when two notes share the same title in the same folder).
* **Multi-Type Support:** Backs up `text`, `code`, and `mermaid` notes out of the box.
* **YAML Frontmatter:** Each `.md` file includes a frontmatter block with `trilium_id`, `created`, and `modified` timestamps, making it easy to diff versions or re-import later.
* **Resilient:** Features an automated retry queue. If a note fails to download (e.g., network error), it gets logged in the state file and is automatically reprocessed on the next run.
* **Fast:** Utilizes an in-memory metadata cache to drastically reduce redundant API calls when building hierarchical folder paths.

## 📋 Requirements
### System (Debian/Ubuntu)
```bash
sudo apt update
sudo apt install python3 python3-pip
```
### Python Libraries
The script requires the `requests` library:
```bash
pip install requests --break-system-packages
```
> **Note:** On Ubuntu 23+ or Debian 12+, the `--break-system-packages` flag is required if installing globally. Alternatively, use a virtual environment:
> ```bash
> python3 -m venv .venv
> source .venv/bin/activate
> pip install requests
>
> ```
>
>
---
## ⚙️ Setup
1. Clone this repository or download the `trilium_backup_incremental.py` script.
2. Edit the three configuration variables at the top of the script to match your environment:
```python
SERVER = "http://localhost:8080" # Your Trilium server address
TOKEN = "YOUR_ETAPI_TOKEN" # Settings → ETAPI → Generate token
BACKUP_DIR = Path("/home/youruser/Backup_MD") # Your destination folder
```
*(To get your ETAPI token in TriliumNext: Go to `Menu → Options → ETAPI` and click **Generate new token**).*
---
## 💻 Usage
### First Run (Full Backup)
On its first execution, the script fetches all supported notes and builds the local directory structure.
```bash
python3 trilium_backup_incremental.py
```
**Example Output:**
```text
First backup — exporting all notes...
347 note(s) to process...
[1/347] saved: Home
[2/347] saved: Journal
...
✓ Completed: 347 note(s) saved, 0 skipped.
Backup at: /home/youruser/Backup_MD
```
### Subsequent Runs (Incremental)
On later runs, the script checks the hidden `.backup_state.json` file and only fetches what has changed (plus any previously failed downloads).
**Example Output:**
```text
Last backup: 2026-04-20T14:32:00.123456+00:00
Searching for notes modified since then...
12 note(s) to process...
[1/12] saved: Meeting notes 2026-04-21
[2/12] no changes: Home
...
✓ Completed: 1 note(s) saved, 11 skipped.
```
---
## 📁 Backup Folder Structure
```text
Backup_MD/
├── .backup_state.json ← internal state file & retry queue (hidden)
├── Home [abc123XYZ].md
├── Journal/
│ ├── 2026-04-20 [def456UVW].md
│ └── 2026-04-21 [ghi789RST].md
├── Projects/
│ ├── Project A [jkl012MNO].md
│ └── Project B [pqr345LMN].md
└── ...
```
**Inside each `.md` file:**
```markdown
---
title: "Meeting notes 2026-04-21"
trilium_id: ghi789RST
created: 2026-04-21 09:00:00.000Z
modified: 2026-04-21 11:32:00.000Z
---
Note content here...
```
---
## ⏱️ Scheduling Automatic Backups (Cron)
To run a backup every day at 2:00 AM, open your crontab:
```bash
crontab -e
```
Add the following line (adjusting paths to match your system):
```cron
0 2 * * * python3 /home/youruser/scripts/trilium_backup_incremental.py >> /home/youruser/trilium_backup.log 2>&1
```
The `>> ...log 2>&1` portion captures all script output into a log file so you can review your backup history.
---
## ⚠️ Notes and Limitations
* **Text-focused:** Backs up `text`, `code`, and `mermaid` notes. Canvas notes, renderNotes, relation maps, and other non-text elements are skipped.
* **Attachments:** This is a text-only backup; image attachments and files are not downloaded. If you need attachments, use the native Trilium export feature.
* **HTML → Markdown conversion:** Trilium stores text notes internally as HTML. The script performs a basic conversion (handling headings, paragraphs, and line breaks).
* **Append-only:** The script currently does not delete local `.md` files if the corresponding note is deleted inside Trilium.

"""Backup incremental do Trilium via ETAPI.
- Busca inicial abrangente: captura text, code e mermaid numa única query
- Fila de retry: notas que falharam na rodada anterior são retentadas
- Comparação incremental usa timestamp ISO completo (não só a data)
- Cache de metadados de notas pai para reduzir chamadas à API

# 🩺 Knowledge Debt — TriliumNext Plugin
A **Render Note** dashboard that audits the health of your knowledge base, surfacing notes that have been forgotten, never developed, or left structurally isolated.
---
## What it detects
| Category | Criteria |
|---|---|
| 🔴 **Orphans** | No other note links to them (no backlinks) |
| 🟠 **Stubs** | Text content between 1–250 characters, no children |
| 🟣 **Empty** | Null or blank content, no children (containers excluded) |
| 🔵 **Old TODOs** | Has a `#todo`-style label, unmodified for > 30 days |
| 🟢 **Abandoned** | No children, unmodified for > 90 days |
Collection notes and any note acting as a container (i.e. notes with children) are automatically excluded from **Stubs** and **Empty** to avoid false positives.
---
## Installation
1. Create a new **JS Frontend** note and paste the contents of `knowledge-debt.js`
2. Create a second note (any type) — this will be your dashboard page
3. On the dashboard note, add the relation attribute:
```
~renderNote = <your JS note>
```
4. Open the dashboard note and click **▶ Escanear**
---
## Compatibility
Tested on **TriliumNext** (post-Trilium fork). The plugin auto-detects the internal links table name across different versions (`note_links`, `links`, etc.) and falls back gracefully to relation attributes if no links table is found. All available tables are logged after each scan for debugging.
---
## Thresholds
All thresholds are defined directly in the SQL queries and easy to adjust:
```js
// Stubs: notes shorter than this (in raw HTML characters) are flagged
LENGTH(b.content) BETWEEN 1 AND 250
// Old TODOs: flagged after this many days without modification
julianday('now') - julianday(n.dateModified) > 30
// Abandoned: flagged after this many days without modification
julianday('now') - julianday(n.dateModified) > 90
```
---

# Minimalist Pomodoro + Time Tracker
A monochromatic Pomodoro timer widget with per-note time tracking and automated report generation. Built with zero external dependencies in ~130 lines of code.
A monochromatic Pomodoro timer widget with per-note time tracking and automated report generation. Built with zero external dependencies.
## Features
* **Pomodoro Timer:** Standard 25min focus / 5min break cycles.
* **Per-Note Tracking:** Automatically logs how much time you spend on each note while the timer is running.
* **Monochromatic UI:** Uses the active theme's CSS variables for a distraction-free experience.
## 🚀 What's New (Latest Updates)
**v4 - Native Widget Panel**
* **Right-pane widget:** Replaced the absolutely-positioned floating button with a proper `RightPanelWidget`, rendering the timer as a native collapsible section in the right panel.
* **No more overlap:** Removed `_autoposition()` and all manual coordinate logic — the widget now follows Trilium's layout system naturally.
* **Cleaner UI:** Timer display enlarged to 32px; controls expand to full width.
**v3 - Core Bug Fixes & Stability**
* **Wall-clock time tracking:** The timer no longer stops or loses time when the Trilium window is minimized or loses focus (bypassing `setInterval` throttling).
* **Pause fix:** Fixed a bug where time wasn't accounted for correctly after unpausing a session (`lastTick` reset issue).
**v2 - Workflow & Persistence**
* **Seamless Transitions:** Automatically chains sessions (Focus → Break → Focus) without stopping.
* **Safe Persistence:** Saves progress to `localStorage` on pauses or app closures. The timer automatically restores pending data if you reopen the app.
* **Auto-Reports:** Generates a formatted note on stop, detailing completed cycles (and if they were chained), total time, and time spent per note.
## Installation
1. Create a `JS Frontend` note.
2. Paste the script code or import the `.zip`.
3. Add the label: `#widget`. Reload Trilium.
> To place the widget in the **left pane** instead, change `get parentWidget()` to `'left-pane'` and the base class to `api.NoteContextAwareWidget` with `doRender()`.

## 🌟 Key Features
### 1. General Polish & Scrollbars
* **Minimalist Scrollbars:** Slimmer scrollbars (6px) with a transparent track and a subtle thumb that perfectly matches your current theme's border color.
* **Theme-Aware Selection:** Highlighting text now uses a beautifully tinted color mixed from the main text color.
* **Fixed Card Links:** Corrects opacity issues on card links, ensuring titles remain bold and legible while adding a smooth hover underline effect.
### 2. Sidebar & Note Tree (Launcher & Fancytree)
* **Centered Launcher Icons:** Fixes padding conflicts to ensure left-sidebar icons are perfectly sized (14px) and centered.
* **Refined Note Tree:** Increases padding and border-radius for tree items, making them more clickable and modern.
* **Active Note Highlighting:** The currently active note receives a prominent blue background badge on its title and a solid left border on the node, making it impossible to lose your place.
* **Sleek Hover Effects:** Smooth background transitions when hovering over notes in the tree.
### 3. Obsidian-Style Text Editor
* **Spacious Typography:** Increases line height (1.9) and margin spacing for paragraphs and lists to improve readability.
* **Prominent Headers:** H1, H2, and H3 tags are bolder and feature increased top and bottom margins for distinct visual hierarchy.
* **Auto-Hiding Toolbar:** The CKEditor top toolbar now fades out (50% opacity) when you are just reading, and fully appears (100% opacity) when you focus on the editor or hover over it.
### 4. Card View Enhancements
* **Responsive Grid:** Introduces dynamic auto-fill columns with proper gaps (12px) to prevent cards from touching each other on desktop.
* **Flat Design:** Removes default box-shadows in favor of clean, subtle 1px borders with rounded corners (8px).
* **Better Padding:** Increases inner padding for more "breathing room" around the text.
### 5. Elegant Kanban Board View (V3)
* **Translucent Columns:** Columns use a color-mixed semi-transparent background.
* **Color-Coded Headers:** The first 5 columns automatically receive distinct, beautifully colored top borders (Blue, Orange, Teal, Red, Purple).
* **Interactive Cards:** Board notes feature a subtle hover lift (`translateY`) and border color transition.
* **Refined Add Buttons:** "New Item" and "Add Column" buttons have dashed borders and soft background colors on hover.
### 6. Colorful Table View (Collection View)
* **Auto-Coloring Columns:** The first 15 columns are automatically color-coded with distinct, harmonious hex values for extreme data clarity.
* **Clean Borders:** Uses semi-transparent borders for cells and headers to avoid a cluttered look.
* **Row Hover Effects:** Entire rows softly highlight when hovered.
* **Refined Resize Handles:** Column resize handles only appear on hover to keep headers looking clean.
### 7. Mobile Optimization
* **Single-Column Cards:** Forces card views into a single column on mobile screens to prevent text from being squished or cut off.
* **Hidden Code Blocks in Cards:** Hides `<pre>` and `<code>` blocks within card previews on mobile, as long lines of code (like shebangs) often break the card layout.
* **Always-Visible Editor Toolbar:** Bypasses the auto-hiding editor toolbar on mobile, as touch devices don't have a "hover" state.
* **Horizontal Scroll for Tables:** Markdown tables now automatically scroll horizontally on small screens to prevent the entire page from breaking its width.
* **Scaled Typography:** Dynamically reduces font sizes for titles, headers, and UI elements to fit perfectly on smaller viewports.
### 8. Promoted Attributes & Tags
* **Attribute Table Layout:** Transforms standard promoted attributes into a clean, aligned table layout (`Label:` `Value`).
* **Rounded Pills:** Note attributes in the list view are transformed into beautiful rounded pills with a monospace font.
* **Labels (`#`):** Rendered with a soft green background and border.
* **Relations (`~`):** Rendered with a soft blue background and border.
**Context:** When a note uses the `collection` type with **List view**, attributes shown on the right side of each item are rendered as a single raw text string inside `.rendered-note-attributes` — something like:
```
~renderNote=AI Code #color="#4de64d" #subtreeHidden
```
There's no per-attribute markup, so CSS alone can't target individual labels or relations. This snippet uses a small frontend script to re-parse and re-render those strings as styled pills, then CSS to style them.
---
## How it works
The `.rendered-note-attributes` span contains a mix of raw text nodes and `<a>` anchor elements (for relation targets). The script walks those child nodes, identifies labels (`#`) and relations (`~`) by their prefix, and rebuilds the element as a sequence of individual `<span class="attr-pill ...">` elements. A `MutationObserver` watches for new list items so it works dynamically as you navigate.
A configurable `HIDDEN` set lets you suppress noisy system attributes (like `#color`, `#subtreeHidden`, `#iconClass`) that are already expressed visually elsewhere in the UI.
---
## Setup
### 1. Frontend Script
Create a new note of type **JS Frontend** and add the attribute `#run=frontendStartup`.
Paste the following code:
```javascript
const HIDDEN = new Set(['subtreeHidden', 'color', 'iconClass', 'viewType']);
function parsePills(el) {
if (el.dataset.pillified === '1') return;
el.dataset.pillified = '1';
const pills = [];
let pending = null;
for (const node of el.childNodes) {
if (node.nodeType === Node.TEXT_NODE) {
for (const part of node.textContent.split(/\s+/).filter(Boolean)) {
if (pending) { pills.push(pending); pending = null; }
if (part.endsWith('=')) {
pending = { type: 'relation', prefix: part, link: null };
} else {
pills.push({
type: part.startsWith('~') ? 'relation' : 'label',
prefix: part,
link: null
});
}
}
} else if (node.tagName === 'A') {
if (pending) {
pending.link = node.cloneNode(true);
pills.push(pending);
pending = null;
} else {
pills.push({ type: 'relation', prefix: '~', link: node.cloneNode(true) });
}
}
}
if (pending) pills.push(pending);
el.innerHTML = '';
for (const pill of pills) {
const name = (pill.prefix || '').replace(/^[~#]/, '').replace(/=$/, '');
if (HIDDEN.has(name)) continue;
const span = document.createElement('span');
span.className = `attr-pill attr-pill-${pill.type}`;
if (pill.link) {
span.appendChild(document.createTextNode(pill.prefix));
span.appendChild(pill.link);
} else {
span.textContent = pill.prefix;
}
el.appendChild(span);
}
}
function processAll() {
document.querySelectorAll('.rendered-note-attributes:not([data-pillified])').forEach(parsePills);
}
processAll();
new MutationObserver(mutations => {
for (const m of mutations) {
m.addedNodes.forEach(node => {
if (node.nodeType !== Node.ELEMENT_NODE) return;
if (node.matches?.('.rendered-note-attributes')) parsePills(node);
node.querySelectorAll?.('.rendered-note-attributes:not([data-pillified])').forEach(parsePills);
});
}
}).observe(document.body, { childList: true, subtree: true });
```
## Customization
- **Pill size:** adjust `font-size` in `.attr-pill` (e.g. `0.8em`) and `padding` as needed.
- **Hidden attributes:** edit the `HIDDEN` set in the script to add or remove attribute names you want suppressed.
- **Colors:** the green/teal tones are for labels, blue/purple for relations — change `rgba()` values freely to match your theme.
---
## Notes
- Tested on TriliumNext with List view on `collection`-type notes.
- The `MutationObserver` handles dynamic navigation without needing to reload.
- This does not affect other note views (Book, Grid, etc.) — only `.rendered-note-attributes` elements are targeted.
